  3. Use Mosquito Dunks: Mosquito dunks are small, donut-shaped tablets containing Bacillus thuringiensis  (BT), a natural bacterium that creates spores and is ingested by the mosquito larvae. The activated toxin breaks down the gut lining which kills the larvae from starvation and infection.  Place one or two dunks inside your rain barrel according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Mosquito dunks are safe for humans, pets, and wildlife, making them an effective and eco-friendly solution for mosquito control.
  4. Incorporate Mosquitofish: If your rain barrel is large enough and allows for aquatic life, consider introducing mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). These small freshwater fish are voracious consumers of mosquito larvae and can help keep the mosquito population in check.
